Spinal Decompression

A non-surgical option for certain kinds of disc and nerve-related back and neck pain - when the presentation actually fits.

What It Is

Spinal decompression is a gentle, motorised traction technique that applies a controlled, gradual stretch along the spine. The intent is to slightly increase the space between vertebrae, reducing pressure on discs and the nerve structures near them, and encouraging fluid and nutrient exchange in tissue that has limited blood supply of its own.

It is non-invasive, requires no medication, and most people find the sessions comfortable - many describe them as relaxing. You stay clothed, lie on a specialised table, and a harness applies the traction in slow cycles of tension and release rather than one continuous pull.

When We Consider It

Disc-related pain

Disc bulges or herniations producing back or neck pain, particularly where symptoms shift with position.

Radiating symptoms

Sciatica or arm symptoms where a nerve root appears to be compressed rather than irritated further along its path.

Degenerative disc changes

Reduced disc height with associated pain, where creating space may reduce the load on sensitive structures.

Persistent pain

Back or neck pain that has not responded adequately to manual treatment and exercise alone.

It is not right for everyone. Spinal decompression is not appropriate for people with certain fractures, advanced osteoporosis, spinal implants or hardware, tumours, some abdominal conditions, or during pregnancy. It is also simply the wrong tool for a lot of back pain - most cases respond better to adjustment, soft-tissue work and progressive loading. Dr. Nario will only recommend it where the exam and your history genuinely point that way, and will tell you plainly when they do not.

What a Course of Care Looks Like

Assessment first

Decompression is never the starting point. We examine you, establish what is generating your symptoms, and determine whether the presentation is one this technique is suited to.

A session

You lie comfortably on the table while the system applies slow cycles of traction and release. Sessions typically run fifteen to twenty minutes and are usually painless.

Part of a plan, not the whole plan

Decompression works best combined with other care - adjustment where joints are restricted, soft-tissue work, and exercise to build the support that keeps the result. On its own it rarely holds.

Reassess honestly

We track your response. If you are not improving in the way we would expect, we change the approach rather than continuing a course that is not delivering.

Setting Expectations

Spinal decompression can be genuinely useful for the right presentation. It is not a cure for all back pain, and you should be sceptical of anyone who describes it that way. Results vary with the specific condition, how long it has been present and how consistently you complete the plan - and some people are better served by a different approach entirely.

Our commitment is simple: we will tell you honestly whether we think this is likely to help you, and we will tell you just as honestly if it is not.
