Conditions We Treat
Neck Pain & Stiffness
Your head weighs about twelve pounds, and your neck holds it up all day while staying mobile enough to look over your shoulder. That is a demanding job.
Why Necks Give Trouble
The cervical spine is seven small vertebrae carrying a heavy load through a very large range of motion. It is also where a lot of modern life concentrates: hours looking down at a screen, a pillow that does not support you, an old collision the body compensated around, a training program heavy on pressing and light on pulling.
Sustained postural load
The further forward your head drifts, the harder the muscles at the back of the neck have to work to stop it falling. Hold that for eight hours a day and those tissues fatigue, tighten and start to ache - usually by mid-afternoon, usually across the top of the shoulders.
Joint restriction
Cervical joints can lose their normal glide, most often on one side. The result is a neck that turns comfortably one way and catches the other, plus a diffuse ache that does not have one precise spot.
Disc and nerve involvement
When a cervical disc is irritated it can affect the nerve roots that supply the arm, producing pain, pins and needles, or weakness that travels below the elbow. This changes the exam and the plan considerably.
Old injury that never fully resolved
A whiplash injury or a fall from years ago can leave altered movement patterns behind long after the original tissue healed. The neck works, but it works differently - and the surrounding structures pay for it.
Signs Worth Paying Attention To
Turning one way only
Comfortable rotation to one side and restriction to the other is one of the clearest indicators of joint restriction.
Afternoon build-up
Pain absent in the morning that grows through a workday points squarely at sustained postural load.
Headache from the base of the skull
Pain starting at the top of the neck and wrapping toward the temple or behind the eye often has a cervical driver.
Symptoms into the arm
Pain, numbness or tingling below the elbow suggests nerve involvement and needs a careful exam.
Waking up stiff
Regularly waking with a sore neck usually implicates sleeping position and pillow height as much as the neck itself.
Constant shoulder tension
That permanent band of tightness across the top of the shoulders is frequently a neck problem, not a shoulder one.
How We Approach It
Examine before treating
We assess how your neck moves in every direction, check the joints segment by segment, test the surrounding musculature, and screen the nerves if any symptoms travel into the arm. That tells us what is driving your pain rather than simply where it lands.
Restore motion and settle the tissue
Chiropractic adjustment restores movement to restricted cervical joints. Soft-tissue work releases the muscles that have been compensating. Most people notice a change in rotation within the first few visits.
Fix the load
Treatment that is not paired with changing what caused the problem tends not to hold. We address your workstation, your screen height, your pillow, and the strength of the muscles that should be holding your head up without effort.
Build durability
Deep neck flexor training and mid-back strength work are unglamorous and highly effective. They are usually the difference between relief and a lasting result.
Small Changes That Matter
- Raise your monitor so the top of the screen sits at eye level
- Bring your phone up to your face instead of dropping your head to it
- Pick a pillow that keeps your head level with your spine, not propped forward
- Break up long stretches at the desk - a two-minute reset every half hour beats one long break
- Train the muscles that pull your shoulder blades back, not only the ones you can see
